Share Your Experience: Help Improve Transmission Line Development in Michigan

As a landowner in an area of a recently proposed electric transmission line, we would like your feedback on Michigan’s transmission line permitting process. Your insights—what worked well and what didn’t—will help guide how developers and regulators in Michigan engage with communities before and during the development process. Please complete the survey to share your feedback.

Why your voice is essential

Your experience can inform how future energy infrastructure projects are developed. Your voice can do the following:

  • Ensure local perspectives are thoughtfully considered.
  • Help developers and regulators identify and address concerns early in the development processes.
  • Ensure future projects are as beneficial as possible for landowners like you.

About the survey

  • The survey takes about 10–15 minutes to complete.
  • Your responses are confidential and will be used only for research and policy improvement.
  • Results will be shared anonymously with the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) to help shape future transmission permitting practices.

About the transmission projects

Two major transmission lines in Michigan were proposed by Michigan Electric Transmission Company (METC) and have been approved for development:

  • Nelson Road to Oneida Line: A 39-mile, high-voltage transmission line connecting Gratiot and Eaton Counties.
  • Helix to Hiple Line: A 55-mile, high-voltage transmission line connecting the Michigan/Indiana border to Calhoun County.

These projects are part of a regional effort to modernize the electric grid and improve reliability.

Who is the Great Plains Institute?

GPI is a nonprofit organization working to improve how new energy infrastructure is built across the country to help accelerate the transition to net-zero carbon emissions for the benefit of people, the economy, and the environment. Read more about GPI, our work, and our history.

GPI is an independent organization funded by a mix of philanthropic and government grants, individual donors, and fee-for-service contracts. We are not affiliated with METC, ITC Holdings, or MPSC.

We are conducting this survey to better understand how landowners experience the permitting and engagement process during transmission development. Because of its immediate relevance to key energy projects in Michigan, we will share the anonymized data with MPSC. Survey participants may contact GPI to request access to the final results.
