The Great Plains Institute (GPI) held a virtual launch event to introduce its first-of-a-kind Atlas of Carbon and Hydrogen Hubs for United States Decarbonization on February 1, 2022. The Atlas is a novel resource, identifying 14 areas across the United States with the potential to become carbon and hydrogen hubs.
February’s event showcased the ways carbon and hydrogen hubs can help the US meet its climate goals. The study’s authors, Dane McFarlane and Elizabeth Abramson, formally introduced the Atlas, and Jessie Stolark, Carbon Capture Coalition Public Policy & Member Relations Manager, presented on the policy behind hubs deployment.
Developing and deploying carbon and hydrogen hubs in the near term is a smart climate strategy. Nearly all global climate modeling scenarios require low-carbon hydrogen and carbon management to achieve net-zero emissions by midcentury. Carbon and hydrogen hubs can focus planning, coordination, policy, and investment regionally, helping the US accelerate emissions reductions while supporting communities and boosting local economies
