electric vehicle

Participants in the Midcontinent Transportation Electrification Collaborative (MTEC) recently submitted letters to congressional leadership, Transportation Secretary Buttigieg, and Energy Secretary Granholm regarding federal economic recovery opportunities that could create vast transportation electrification investments in the Midcontinent region.

With recent announcements by federal agencies supporting electric vehicle (EV) adoption and infrastructure build-out, the time is ripe to urge Congress to back federal investments that support regional EV priorities. These measures are an important opportunity to sustain American leadership and deliver economic, equity, environmental, and health benefits.

Facilitated by the Great Plains Institute, MTEC comprises automakers, state governments, electric utilities and cooperatives, EV charging companies, and environmental organizations.

The letters urge federal policy makers to prioritize investments in the Midcontinent region as part of a federal economic recovery program, stating that the region “is the heart of automotive manufacturing.” Priorities in the letters include the following:

  • Supporting sustained American manufacturing leadership by supporting sales of EVs and the growth of a robust and diverse domestic EV market
  • Keeping the automotive supply chain in the US by supporting EV and EV component manufacturing
  • Enabling EVs to drive everywhere by supporting investments in EV charging infrastructure
  • Supporting EV research, development, and demonstration
