This year, more than ever, we have seen the necessity of our work to convene unlikely allies around a common purpose to enact real and lasting change. Just one example was the passage of the FUTURE Act in the federal budget bill. It is one of the most significant energy and environmental accomplishments by Congress in recent memory and the culmination of more than a decade of work.
This federal legislation will drive investment in technology that captures carbon dioxide from power plants and industrial facilities so it can be put to beneficial use or permanently stored. This is just the kind of large-scale effort needed to change our trajectory and substantially eliminate carbon emissions from the energy system by 2050.
The FUTURE Act was made possible because unlikely allies came together from industrial and tech companies, environmental organizations, labor unions, and energy policy organizations to find common ground. We are incredibly proud of the Carbon Capture Coalition, which GPI co-convenes, and are encouraged by the success we’ve achieved and our ambitious goals for the coming decades.
This is just one example of the progress GPI has made in the last year. There’s still so much potential for increasing our impact across GPI’s focus areas, including carbon management, communities, electricity, efficiency, and transportation and fuels.
We know we have the technology, relationships, and strategies to transform the energy system.
