MINNEAPOLIS—The Great Plains Institute released the following statement by President and CEO Rolf Nordstrom on the Carbon Capture Coalition’s announcement of Jessie Stolark as its new executive director (GPI convenes the Coalition):
“We are thrilled and grateful to welcome Jessie Stolark as the Carbon Capture Coalition’s first executive director.
The fact that the Coalition now needs its own dedicated leader is a testament to its incredible growth, driven by the success of the Carbon Capture Coalition members themselves in advocating for unprecedented federal policies that are already catalyzing carbon removal projects across the country.
What began as a small group devoted to exploring the role of carbon management technologies as both a climate and economic competitiveness strategy has now become one of the largest coalitions of industry, NGOs, and labor in the country. It brings together the most progressive and conservative members of Congress, urban and rural, blue- and white-collar workers, and supporters from industry, environmental and climate organizations, labor unions, and many others.
The landmark reform and expansion of the federal 45Q tax credit in the 2018 FUTURE Act, its subsequent extension in 2020, and more than $12 billion in federal investments in the recent Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act represent some of the most important bipartisan climate accomplishments in a generation and the biggest global investment to date in the commercialization of carbon management technologies. And none of this would have happened without the Carbon Capture Coalition.
In her previous role as public policy member relations manager with the Coalition, Jessie played an important role in the Coalition’s growth and success (including more than 100 current members). Her deep knowledge of the Coalition and its members’ diverse goals, understanding of carbon removal technologies, and ability to listen and find common ground will be an essential skill set in fostering the level of social acceptance needed to deploy carbon management as broadly as needed to achieve our midcentury climate goals, maintain US competitiveness, and support good jobs.
Having someone of Jessie’s caliber lead the Coalition at this pivotal time will be critical to building on its extraordinary success to date and helping realize its full potential. Her colleagues and I at GPI couldn’t be more excited about what Jessie’s leadership will make possible in achieving our shared mission.”
