MINNEAPOLIS—The Great Plains Institute (GPI) released the following statement by President and CEO Rolf Nordstrom on the Biden-Harris Administration’s announcement of seven regional clean hydrogen hubs selected to receive $7 billion in federal funding:

“Today’s announcement of federally supported hydrogen hubs launches a new opportunity to equitably build a clean hydrogen economy, and GPI looks forward to working with the new hubs to accelerate decarbonization across the economy. GPI is working to enable the development of a robust and equitable clean hydrogen economy to expand our nation’s portfolio of options for decarbonizing some of the hardest-to-decarbonize sectors, such as agriculture, heavy industry, and parts of the transportation sector.

GPI has extensive experience with hydrogen and related technologies dating back to 2003 and is actively engaging various stakeholders at different scales—local, state, and federal—on using clean hydrogen to achieve climate goals, maintain and create jobs, and help a wide range of industries flourish in a net-zero emissions world. We convene three separate stakeholder initiatives that bring unique perspectives to the development of a hydrogen economy, including the Hydrogen Economy Collaborative, the Carbon Capture Coalition, and the Industrial Innovation Initiative. Leading up to the announcement of these hydrogen hubs, GPI released a comprehensive Atlas of Carbon and Hydrogen Hubs that illustrates the potential for carbon removal and hydrogen development nationally.

We are looking to enable pilot, demonstration, and at-scale projects and look forward to forming new connections and collaborations with hub partners, state agencies, and the hub communities to achieve an equitable net-zero carbon economy. We congratulate all the selected hubs across the US for their awards and would like to offer particular congratulations to the Midwest and Heartland hubs here in our home region.
