A new study by Consumer Reports equips consumers with data showing the relatively lower cost of electric vehicle (EV) maintenance and overall ownership when compared to comparable gas-powered vehicles. Consumer Reports recently released a study analyzing EV ownership costs, including a chapter on their lifetime maintenance costs. The study looks at both battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and helps answer frequently asked questions about EV maintenance and other costs.
The National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) reaffirmed their support for deployment of carbon capture technologies during their annual meeting this week. NARUC also recently collaborated with the Western Interstate Energy Board to host a six-part webinar series on carbon capture, utilization, and storage. Continue reading »
The Bioeconomy Coalition of Minnesota, facilitated by the Great Plains Institute, and the Natural Resources Research Institute are partnering to raise the profile of biochar in Minnesota. At its upcoming member meeting on November 23, 12:00-2:00 p.m. central, the Bioeconomy Coalition will feature a “Biochar in Minnesota Roundtable” with a panel of experts to talk about the opportunities and limitations of commercializing biochar in Minnesota. A new state-level analysis shows that retrofitting existing facilities with carbon capture and deploying carbon dioxide (CO2) transport infrastructure can deliver jobs and economic benefits while reducing emissions across industries. The Great Plains Institute recently commissioned Rhodium Group to conduct an independent, state-by-state analysis exploring the economic benefits of carbon capture deployment opportunities in the US. GPI identified the facilities examined in this analysis as carbon capture retrofit projects with near- to medium-term feasibility. Continue reading »

The Sustainable States Network has a brand-new online presence to showcase its growing impact on sustainability and clean energy at the local and state levels, and across an increasing footprint in the US. The new website, SustainableStates.net, provides information about the network, specific state programs, and how large, medium, and small local governments are putting sustainability on the local policy agenda and taking action on thousands of clean energy goals. As most things in 2020, the Metro Clean Energy Resource Team (CERT) at the Great Plains Institute made our 13th Annual Resource and Networking Event virtual, minus the networking part. We rescheduled the event from April 30 to October 1, hoping we would be able to meet in person by the fall. Of course, that was not in the cards. We shifted the topic of the event from electrification to rebuilding efforts in Minneapolis following the killing of George Floyd while in police custody on May 23.
A new report lays out how Minnesota can link solar power with electric vehicle (EV) charging and enable the state to maximize both technologies’ broad benefits. Leading a project team that included utilities, EV and solar industries, local governments, state agencies, and clean energy advocates, the Great Plains Institute developed the report on capturing the synergies that can be realized through solar plus EV applications. The report presents the detailed case for solar plus EV synergies, the barriers and opportunities for capturing them, and the needed next steps for a market transformation effort.
